    Stage Characteristics

When talking about Stages, we often refer to low-stage (Stages 1–2) and high-stage (Stages 3–5) activities.

    Low-Stage Business

Every new business starts out at Stage 1, focusing on survival. It is heavily dependent on its founder's involvement. Leaders in the business wear multiple hats, working in areas outside their expertise.

    High-Stage Company

As the business stabilizes and develops, it progresses to higher Stages. Teams and operations can function effectively without the founder. Specialized leaders head Core Functions.

    Your Stage

Your Stage result is an average across all your answers. The chart to the left illustrates the result of each factor contributing to your overall Stage.

    Building a Great Company

Based on decades of business experience and data, we believe that great companies have high-trust relationships with all their Ideal Stakeholders, produce offerings that people want, attract and retain great people, are not dependent upon any one or two people to thrive, and are built to last.

We've learned a lot about how businesses evolve. Just like humans, businesses develop in a progression through a series of inevitable stages. Understanding the “Whens,” “Hows,” “Whys,” and “Wheres” of each Stage makes it easier to focus, align, and progress confidently.

Essentially, we find that most small and mid-sized organizations move through five developmental Stages on their journey from new business to a company you could hand off to the next generation of leaders and/or owners.

Countless factors contribute to a company's well-being. Leaders can use the Stages of Development as a map to confidently identify such factors, assess progress, and build a great company. Read on to locate your company on the map.
